A beautiful renovation mixing old and new

Tegnérgatan, by Nissebysnickeri, is a unique renovation with exceptional attention to detail and some of the finest bespoke joinery and craftsmanship we’ve seen in a while. We grabbed a few minutes with carpenter, Per Nisseby to go through some of the extraordinary fine details.

How did the apartment look before you began?
Very different to how it appears today. There’s been a slight change in the layout, new floors, updates to almost all ceilings and walls, and completely new bathrooms. It’s a dramatic change but one that’s been very empathetic to the apartment and its place in the building, which dates to the late 1800s.

Can you tell us a little about the owners?
It’s a couple with older kids. The couple will live in the apartment, but their children have had a pretty active part in the renovation process as well.

What were the demands from the client side?
This is a couple who have worked hard to have the opportunity to create their dream home. That time had come, and they had very high expectations, as you’d expect.

Where did Buster + Punch come into the process?
We suggested Buster + Punch during the drawing process of the joinery, and the customer immediately fell for the design.

There are so many details in the project – which are your favourites?
The rounded endings that reoccur in most of the spaces. The curved bench in the kitchen is beautiful. The French mouldings on the shutters and the curved stucco that continues the theme of our round ends throughout the apartment.

How was it to keep a balance between the period character and the build’s new personality?
It can be a challenge to combine original details with new carpentry. And it’s important to get the balance right, so that neither style takes over. But the challenge makes the whole thing more resolved at the end.

Tell us a little about material and colour choice.
All carpentry has frames and drawers in oak, which also applies to the herringbone parquet in oak.
The kitchen, wardrobes and bookshelves have painted doors with French mouldings.
The colour choices are calm and serene to create a peaceful feel. We settled on a small handful of colours to use throughout the apartment to maintain a common thread. In terms of the hardware we’ve used Buster + Punch T-Bars, Closet Bars and Furniture Knobs in Brass.
