A PHOTOGRAPHER’S RETREAT
Created for photographer Patrik Johall, this Stockholm retreat feels like a part of the nature that surrounds it. Its exterior tones of stone and profiles etch themselves into the granite undulations of the plot. Inside, things warm up as a relaxed palette of rich wood and soft concrete plays out across a minimal design that doubles down on function.
The dwelling is designed by Swedish architect trio Claesson Koivisto Rune, whose portfolio often pulls from Scandinavian and Japanese forms – livable, smart and with lots of focus on material crafting. The spaces all have a high degree of finesse, and the use of Buster + Punch’s hardware, switches and detailing is particularly striking, using light and dark finishes to complement detail placement.
An aspect of the retreat that’s especially well executed is the use of natural materials to bridge the gap between inside and out. Like-for-like materials are used adjacent to exterior doorways for a buttery and smooth transition.
